The Museum of Occupations was opened in Tallinn in July.
This is literally the newest museum in Tallinn – the construction of the
specially for the purpose designed building started in August 2002 and the
museum was finished in June 2003.
The museum introduces occupations of the Estonian recent past and their
influence on Estonian habitants. It mostly handles the Russian occupation
(1940-1991) but also the German occupation (1941-1922). The museum’s exposition
tries to open up the destiny of the people at that time with documents and
artefacts gathered from people. The video-, audio- and photographic materials
carve out an idea of the changes and sufferings caused by the foreign power.
The museum was established and all of its activities funded by The
Kistler-Ritso Foundation. The Kistler-Ritso Foundation was founded in USA, State
of Washington, in 1998. The Kistler-Ritso Estonian Foundation founded in the
same year is coordinating the activities in Estonia. The founder, financer and
president of The Kistler-Ritso Foundation is Dr Olga Kistler-Ritso.
The activities of The Kistler-Ritso Estonian Foundation form a science
project with a purpose to collect, exhibit, document and research the monuments
of Estonian recent past. Contributing works are highly appreciated: memories,
articles, photographs etc. You can send your works to the following foundations’
addresses: by e-mail krf@mailer.ee or by mail to Endla 69, 10613
Tallinn, Estonia.
